Trail Mix Day

This special day celebrates a food developed as an energy-rich snack to take on hikes in the great outdoors.

Trail mixes are typically made up of a combination of nuts, granola, dried fruit, and chocolate.

The snack is lightweight, easy to store, and provides a quick energy boost from carbohydrates as well as sustained energy from healthy fats in the nuts.

The concept of trail mix is attributed to two California surfers who, in 1968, created a mixture of peanuts and raisins as a portable energy snack. The snack was also mentioned in Jack Kerouac's 1958 novel, The Dharma Bums.

This is a good day to pack up some trail mix and head for the great outdoors!
