Great American Pot Pie Day

Created in 2002 by Marie Callender's, maker of frozen pot pies, this September 23 food holiday celebrates an American creation similar to classic meat pies filled with chicken, pork, or beef, and often including vegetables such as carrots, peas, green beans, and potatoes with a flaky top crust.

The first frozen pot pies were were introduced by Swanson Foods in the early 1950s.

Some folks make pot pies at home; others order this classic dish at a local diner or restaurant.

Frozen pot pies like those made by Swanson are available at most grocers.
