Dense and spicy, fruitcake has been around for millennia (the same cakes, some will claim), but the winter holiday tradition of gifting them began in Victorian England. Known as Christmas Cake or Plum Cake, the dessert made with candied or dried fruit mixed with nuts and spices, and often soaked in spirits, was especially popular and its fame spread to the Americas and other continents. This food holiday is celebrated two days after Christmas as a helpful reminder that no one has touched the fruitcake yet.
