December 1 is an awareness day for the world’s favorite snacking apple, the Red Delicious. Eat a Red Apple Day celebrates this iconic crimson fruit that emerged on a mutant limb in a New Jersey orchard in 1923 and went on to become America’s most popular apple.
“Eat an apple a day on going to bed and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread,” went the 19th century Welsh proverb reduced to the aphorism “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Researchers at the University of Michigan School of Nursing recently tested the proverb and found no statistically meaningful difference in visits to the doctor for daily apple eaters, but it did find they were less likely to use prescription medications; i.e. an apple a day kept the pharmacist away.
