Día del Taco, or the Day of the Taco, is celebrated in Mexico on March 31 each year.
Officially designated in 2004, this food holiday honors one of Mexico's most iconic and beloved dishes, the taco, which has deep historical roots dating back to pre-Hispanic times.
The term "taco" likely derives from the Nahuatl word quauhtaqualli, which means "the thing that is folded" or "to wrap." The first documented taco feast, known as a taquiza, was organized by Hernán Cortés in the 16th century for his soldiers in Coyoacán, now part of Mexico City.
Día del Taco is observed with taco parties and special promotions by fast food restaurants.
