Cherry Popsicle Day

This refreshing summer food holiday celebrates store-bought and homemade cherry popsicles, made by freezing cherry juice or another cherry-flavored beverage in a mold with a stick or handle for holding.

Cherry popsicles sometimes include coconut milk, yogurt, honey or cherry puree for added texture and flavor.

Popsicles date back to 1905, when a San Francisco teenager by the name of Frank Epperson mixed some sugary soda powder with water and left it out on a cold night with the wooden stirrer in the bowl. The mixture froze and the next morning Epperson ate the iced soda, licking it off the stirrer.

Calling the treat he discovered an Epsicle, Epperson started selling the treat in his neighborhood.and later applied for a patent for his

Buoyed by this success, Epperson applied for a patent for the "frozen confection of attractive appearance, which can be conveniently consumed without contamination by contact with the hand and without the need for a plate, spoon, fork or other implement" in 1924.

Eventually, Epperson changed the ice pop's name to what his children called it: Pop's 'Sicle, or Popsicle.
