The light and airy sponge cake known as “Angel Food” is celebrated as a food holiday on October 10 each year. Popular and perhaps originating among the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 19th century, this dessert was called a “Snow Drift Cake” in the first known published recipe in 1871.
Angel food is often baked in a special tube pan with a removable bottom and served with a sweet topping or glaze and a fruit like strawberries.
