In the hours leading up to midnight and the dawning of the new year, much partying and celebration will occur, including the tradition of dropping objects from tall buildings to mark the moment. As the Times Square Ball is falling on New Year's Eve an illuminated 8-foot sardine will sink from the third story of the Tides Institute and Museum of Art in downtown Eastport, Maine.

Located on the Canadian border, Eastport is home to the first sardine cannery in the United States. The News Year’s Eve event honoring the local industry is paired with a Maple Leaf Drop an hour earlier (Atlantic Standard Time) in recognition of the community’s northern neighbors.
